In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is nearly impossible to avoid screens. From smartphones to laptops, screens have become the central hub for work, entertainment, and even social interactions. While these tools have undoubtedly transformed our lives in countless positive ways, they come with a hefty price: the loss of our ability to focus. How do you break free from screen addiction?
I recently had the privilege of being a guest on the Gen Free: Unpluging to Connect Podcast by Kathleen Barlow, where we discussed the impact of screens and social media on Gen Z. But the conversation didn’t stop there—it left me with a powerful realization: This issue is not just for Gen Z. It’s a challenge that spans all generations.
As a time management coach, I know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of notifications, emails, and social media updates. Our attention has become the most valuable—and often most exploited—commodity of the digital age. But what can we do about it? How can we reclaim our time and focus in a world designed to distract us?
It is no secret that we are living in an age of distraction. Our phones buzz, our screens light up with notifications, and our social media feeds constantly refresh with new updates. According to Jonathan Haidt in his book The Anxious Generation, this is the first generation to grow up with smartphones in their pockets, and as a result, their brains are growing differently than those of previous generations. The impact is staggering: The average attention span has been reported to be shorter than that of a goldfish.
Why does this matter? Because constant distraction not only steals our time—it steals our creativity, our learning, and our ability to make clear decisions. And in today’s world, where time is precious and focus is everything, we cannot afford to let our attention slip away unnoticed.
Let is talk science for a moment. Every time your phone dings, your brain releases dopamine—the "feel-good" chemical that keeps you hooked on checking your phone, refreshing your social media feed, or scrolling through endless stories. This cycle of instant gratification leads to what is now known as dopamine-driven feedback loops. Tech platforms thrive on keeping us distracted because, well, the more distracted we are, the more ads we see, and the more money they make.
This constant switching between tasks, from one notification to the next, disrupts our ability to focus. In fact, tech companies design apps specifically to hijack our nervous system, making it easier for us to stay emotionally reactive and engaged for as long as possible.
So, how can we break free from this cycle? The first step is realizing that your focus is sacred. You have the power to reclaim your attention. But how do you start?
With practice you can break free from screen addiction. You've got this!
One of the biggest struggles in today’s world is our fear of boredom. We have become so accustomed to instant gratification that we cannot imagine sitting with our own thoughts for even a few minutes. But boredom is actually a powerful tool—it is where creativity happens, where new ideas form, and where reflection can take place.
I recommend keeping a "boredom list"—a list of activities you can do instead of scrolling: journaling, walking, reading, or simply daydreaming. This list will help you shift from reactive to proactive behavior, helping you reclaim your focus and make room for what truly matters.
Here is the bottom line: Your focus is one of your most valuable assets. Without it, you risk losing time, creativity, and even your peace of mind. But with a little intentionality and discipline, you can protect your attention and turn your minutes into milestones.
If this episode resonated with you, I want to challenge you to take the focus reset challenge this week. Turn off those notifications, designate some screen-free zones, and allow yourself the space to focus on what truly matters.
And remember—your phone is a tool, not your identity. Do not let the filtered highlights on Instagram define your self-worth. Start living on your own terms.
