Discover why momentum beats perfection every time. Feeling like a bottleneck in your own business? Learn how to build systems for time freedom with Wes Towers.
In the early days of building a business, "hustle" is often a badge of honor. You are the CEO, the marketing department, the customer service rep, and the person who makes sure the coffee pot is full. But there comes a point where the very drive that started the business becomes the thing that keeps it from growing.
As I discussed in a recent episode of the Minute Mastery Podcast with systems expert Wes Towers, many founders find themselves "running around like a chook with its head cut off"(tune in to know what this means) busy, exhausted, but ultimately standing still.
If you feel like the bottleneck in your own business, it’s time to stop chasing perfection and start building systems. Here is how to reclaim your time freedom.
The biggest obstacle to a scalable business isn't a lack of capital or a bad market; it’s the founder’s ego. Wes Towers, founder of Uplift 360, points out that most leaders suffer from a specific type of perfectionism: the belief that they can do it better than anyone else.
When you believe you are the only one who can "do it right," you unknowingly sabotage your freedom. You micromanage your team, you delay projects until you can "personally review" them, and you eventually become the bottleneck that stops progress.
The Shift: To grow, you must hire people who are better than you in their specific field. If you hire a programmer, they should be a better coder than you. if you hire a bookkeeper, they should know the numbers better than you. Your job as a leader isn't to be the best at everything; it’s to provide the vision and the system that allows experts to thrive.
In this episode, Wes referenced a foundational book for all business owners: The E-Myth by Michael Gerber. The core lesson? Work ON your business, not IN it.
The bridge between being a "Technician" (doing the work) and an "Entrepreneur" (leading the vision) is the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).Why you need SOPs today (even if you’re a solopreneur):
The Minute Mastery Tip: Start small. Pick one recurring task, like onboarding a new client or posting a blog, and write down every single step. That is your first SOP
We live in an era where AI can generate a month’s worth of content in minutes. However, as Wes and I discussed, this creates a "sea of noise." When everyone uses the same tools to produce "perfect" content, everything starts to sound generic and bland.
Wes’s mantra is simple: Real Beats Perfect.
In a world of artificiality, humanity is your competitive advantage. People don't want to buy from a faceless, "perfect" corporation; they want to connect with an authentic human. Don’t wait until your video is perfectly edited or your website is flawless to launch. Momentum is built by showing up as you are, providing value, and being real with your audience.
If you don't know where your time is going, you can't manage it. One of the most practical tools Wes shared is the Time Audit.
For the next 30 days, keep a notepad on your desk. Every hour, jot down what you did. At the end of the month, categorize these tasks:
By identifying the tasks that drain you, you can begin to systematically outsource them, freeing up space to focus on what truly matters.
As we look toward the future, remember that time is the only resource we all have in equal measure. We all get 24 hours. The difference between the overwhelmed founder and the free entrepreneur is the system.
Don’t wait for the "perfect" time to start systemizing. Don't wait until you have a full team to start writing SOPs. Start where you are. Build momentum.
As Wes beautifully put it: "Momentum beats perfection."
